Christmas Market in Cascais

Hello everyone!
In this post I wanted to talk about my Portuguese Christmas market adventure. Since September 2023, I have been going to a public school 2 stops away from my house to learn Portuguese.
I had a B2 level of Spanish, so I'm not sure if it's been intertwined with Portuguese when I got here or if my Spanish is getting lost. In general, both languages have a lot of similar words, but the Portuguese grammar is really much more complicated.
After a few months, Christmas was approaching and our teacher wanted to spice up the lessons with a nice activity and took us to the Christmas Market. One Saturday morning at 10 am, we met with 2 different class teachers and whoever could come.
I took the train to Cascais, which is a few stops away from my house, and from there I walked to the market, which I realized was a Christmas market, but it was actually a big market. It wasn't a Christmas market, but it was a market where you could find all kinds of gifts and all kinds of things you needed, all kinds of fish and seafood, flowers I had never seen before, Portuguese pastry desserts, everything was there that day.
Our teacher gave us activity sheets, we were supposed to talk to the vendors and practice a little bit, what is this called, how much does it cost per kilo, how do we cook it.
I started chatting with the fishmongers, when I saw some insects/lobster species that I had not seen before, I asked them how we cook it, they explained it slowly, it was already clear that Portuguese was not our mother tongue. They were helpful because it was early in the morning, it was obvious that I wasn't going to buy anything.
I tried to talk to the fruit and vegetable sellers by asking about the price per kilo and the names of the products. I wasn't going to buy them but I couldn't resist, I bought some beautiful red tomatoes that would go well with red dishes. I also added tangerines and oranges to the bag for some vitamin C.
Another activity question was "What do Portuguese people eat for Xmas?" One woman told me the following: spinach, potato dish, Bacalhau and chestnuts 😊 If you have more local dishes, please let me know because this menu was too little 😊
Then we got tired of speaking so much Portuguese and decided to have a coffee somewhere. There, we shared the "azevias" from our activity sheet with the teacher. It's like our bake, but it has marmalade made of chickpeas inside and sugar coating on the outside. I don't normally like Portuguese pastries but this one was very successful.
I was going to buy some ingredients to make Swedish Glögg, spices that I had forgotten even in English language, let alone the Portuguese. After finding cardamom and aniseed with the help of my teacher, I completed my shopping.
It was really priceless that our teacher, who teaches in the evenings during the week, devoted half a day on a Saturday to us in this way. I felt like I was practicing, the language is really hard to understand. People speak very fast and they swallow words. It was fun to do this practice with the Christmas theme.
It is impossible to learn all the fish, meat, fruits and vegetables right away, but I remember when I was studying Spanish and if you practice enough, your vocabulary grows quickly. However, I am not practicing enough at the moment, Spanish and Portuguese mix a lot and I have forgotten the names of a lot of fruits and vegetables.
It was a joyful Christmas market experience with lots of activities. I wish more people from my course class had participated. The conversations you use and live in daily life are different from the life in the classroom. Some people go to the course for the certificate, I go for fun and purely for knowledge, there is no compelling reason for me. They say that a language is one person, it is true.

Bu yazımda Portekizce Christmas marketi maceramdan bahsetmek istedim. 2023 eylül ayından beri evime 2 durak uzakta olan devlet okuluna Portekizce öğrenmek için gidiyorum.
B2 seviyesinde bir ispanyolcam vardı, buraya geldiğinde Portekizceyle birbirini besledi mi, yoksa ispanyolcam kayboluyor mu pek emin olamıyorum. Genel anlamda her iki dilin de birbirlerine benzer bir çok kelimesi mevcut ancak Portekizce gramer’ı gerçekten çok daha karışık geliyor.
Hatrı sayılır birkaç ay sonra, Christmas yaklaştığı için öğretmenimiz güzel bir aktivite ile dersleri eğlenceyle süslemek istedi ve bizi Christmas Market’a götürdü. Bir Cumartesi sabah saati 10, 2 farklı sınıf öğretmeni ve gelebilenler ile buluştuk.
Trenle evime birkaç durak uzaklıkta bulunan Cascais’e gittim ve oradan da yürüyerek Christmas marketi ama aslında tam bir büyük Pazar olduğunu anladığım Pazar alanına ulaştım. Aslında tam bir Christmas market değildi ama her türlü hediye ve ihtiyacınızı bulabileceğiniz, bin bir türlü balık ve deniz ürününden tutun, hayatımda görmediğim çiçek çeşitleri, Portekiz hamur işi tatlıları, hepsi o gün oradaydı.
Öğretmenimiz bize aktivite kağıtlarını verdi, satıcılarla konuşup biraz pratik yapmamız isteniyordu, bunun adı ne, kilosu kaç para, nasıl pişiririz gibi.
Balıkçılarla gayet sohbet etmeye başladım, görmediğim böcek / ıstakoz türleri olunca bunu nasıl pişiriyoruz diye sordum, yavaş yavaş anlattı, zaten ana dilimizin Portekizce olmadığı belliydi. Sabah erken saatler olduğu için yardımcı oluyorlardı, sonuçta bir şey almayacağım belliydi.
Sebze meyvecilerle kilo fiyatlarını, ürünlerin isimlerini sorarak konuşmaya çalıştım. Almayacaktım ancak dayanamadım, çok güzel kıpkırmızı yemeklere uyacak domatesler aldım. Biraz C vitamini olsun mandalina ve portakal da ekledim poşete.
Bir başka aktivite sorusu ise “Portekizliler Xmas ta ne yer?” Bir kadının bana sıraladıkları ise şöyle, ıspanak, patates yemeği, Bacalhau ve kestane 😊 Eğer daha fazla yerel yemek varsa bana söylemenizi rica ederim zira bu menü az geldi 😊
Sonra bu kadar portekizce konuşmaktan yorulup bir yerde kahve içelim dedik. Orada da etkinlik kağıdımızda bulunan “azevias” tan öğretmenle beraber paylaştık. Bizim pişi gibi ancak içinde nohuttan yapılma marmelat var ve dışında şeker kaplaması. Portekiz hamur işlerini çok beğenmiyorum normalde ama bu baya başarılıydı.
İsveç Glögg’ü yapmak için birkaç malzeme alacaktım, portekizcesini bırakın ingilizcesini bile unuttuğum baharatlar. Öğretmenimin yardımıyla kakule ve anason bulduktan sonra alışverişimi tamamladım.
Hafta arası akşam saatinde ders veren öğretmenimizin bir cumartesi yarım gününü bu şekilde bize ayırması gerçekten paha biçilmezdi. Pratik yaptığımı hissettim, dili anlamak gerçekten çok zor. İnsanlar çok hızlı ve kelimeleri yutarak konuşuyor. Bu pratiği de Christmas temasıyla gerçekleştirmek ayrı eğlenceliydi.
Bütün balık, eti meyve sebze çeşitlerini hemen öğrenmek evet imkansız ancak İspanyolca çalıştığım zamanları hatırlıyorum. Yeterince pratik yaparsanız kelime hazneniz hızlıca gelişiyor. Ancak şuan yeterince yapmıyorum, henüz İspanyolcayla portekizce çok karışıyor ve baya sebze meyvenin de adını unutmuşum.
Aktivitesi bol, eğlenceli bir Christmas market tecrübesi oldu bize. Kurs sınıfımdan daha fazla insanın katılmasını dilerdim. Günlük hayatta kullandığınız, yaşadığınız konuşmalarla sınıf içerisindeki hayat farklı oluyor. Sokağa çıkıp insanlarla konuşmak lazım. Bazı insanlar sertifika için, bense eğlence ve tamamen bilgi amaçlı kursa gidiyorum, beni zorlayan bir neden yok. Ana bir dil bir insandır derler, orası doğru.
